MANSTON SPITFIRE AND HURRICANE MUSEUM
Elsham Wolds museum is a small memorial museum and garden on part of the old airfiled but within the grounds of the Anglian water works. Some interesting displays and artefacts including the bomb release of Lancaster ED888 which flew the most Lancaster missions of WWII. Viewing is by prior appointment only.
The Museum of Science and Industry is loacted in central Manchester and is free to enter although donations are invited. The museum's content is as suggested by its name although there is a large aircraft hall that was previously the Manchester air and Space museum. Pictured in October 2014.
We visited the RAF museum at Hendon over the Christmas holiday period during 2014. This was our first visit in around 27 years and needless to say much had changed. The museum is now much bigger and includes the Graham White hangar housing a WWI experience that had only been open for a matter of weeks. It is easily a full day out. Entry is free although you do pay for parking. There are all the usual facilities including a restaurant which served good food.
The Military Aviation Museum is in Virginia Beach, America, and shares a facility with the Fighter Factory which maintains most of the museum's exhibits in airworthy condition. The aircraft are primarily WWI and WWII era machines and when we attended most of the latter were on the flightline for the annual Warbirds airshow so have a look in airshows for more pictures. This is a nice museum with the usual facilities and gift shop and since it is on an active airfield there is always the chance of seeing something flying. From a visit in May 2015.
Smithsonian Air & Space Museum is located in central Washington within walking distance from other attractions such as the White House and Lincoln Memorial. It is a free to enter museum but be prepared for security checks. There are a good number of aircraft on view although many are hung for the ceiling and subdued lighting is also well in evidence making good photography tricky. Visited May 2015.
The Udvar Hazy Centre just outside Washington Dulles airport is designated as an overflow museum for Air and Space but in fact has a more extensive collection of aircraft including B-29 Enola Gay, space shuttle Discovery and several unique German WWII era aircraft. It is free to enter and you can easily spend a day there.
This is my local museum. As the name suggests the main attractions are a Spitfire and Hurricane, both of which have been impressively restored. There are a number of other artefacts, a small shop and cafeteria. Entrance is free. These pictures are from June 2015.
