THE ERICKSON COLLECTION
CASTLE AIR FORCE MUSEUM
This private aircraft collection is based at Madras airport, Oregon. It is a little off the beten track but well worth the effort of visiting. The collection is largely airworthy so you may find one or two aircraft at shows or out on tour but it is not so much a museum as access to a live hangar. There are information boards on each aircraft and a few other exhibits but there are no barriers so you can get up close to the aircraft as we found in September 2019.
Castle AFM is situated next door to the air base of the same name. It is in California a couple of hours south of Sacramento and all the exhibits are stored outside. However because of the dry climate even the WWII exhibits seem to fare well. There are 70 or so aircraft on display with nearly all being ex American military aircraft and because of the outside setting the museum is able to accommodate larger exhibits thsn is often the case. Well worth a visit as we found in September 2019.
This vessel was launched in 1943 and went on to serve in WWII, Korea and Vietnam and was the pick up carrier for Apollo 11 and 12. It is now a floating museum moored up in San Francisco. We visited in September 2019.
